Sûreté du Québec Photo Essay

The Sûreté du Québec responds to the needs of victims of crime with its Victims Assistance Module team. This team ensures coordination of victim support activities as well as the development and standardization of police practices.

In 2013 and 2014, Québec was shaken by two great tragedies: in July 2013, a massive train derailment in the city of Lac-Mégantic resulted in 47 fatalities. In January 2014, a major fire in a seniors' residence in Isle-Verte in the Lower St. Lawrence caused 32 fatalities. In the event of disasters with large numbers of victims, or in exceptional circumstances that call for extraordinary measures, the police and victims' services must be prepared to work together. In this documentary, the Sûreté du Québec explains the assistance it provides to victims and the ways in which they and their partners assist victims of these tragedies.
